Old-Time Resident of Grinnell Dies

Eneas M. Sawyer, 81 years of age, well-known retired farmer and long-time resident of this county, died last Saturday afternoon at his home at 1313 Main street. Mr. Sawyer had been in poor health for the past eight years, and had been confined to his bed for the past year.

The funeral will be held from the Stavanger Quaker church near LeGrand at 2 p.m. Thursday, and interment will be at the Stavanger cemetery.

Mr. Sawyer was born at Leland, Ill., July 31, 1851, and when 15 years of age came to Iowa in a covered wagon, later moving to a farm in Highland township in Tama county, just east of Gilman where he lived until 1915. Hundreds of friends in that community mourn his death for he was a good citizen and was devoted to his family.

In 1915 he moved to Grinnell in order that his children might have the benefit of the educational institutions of this city and while not active in the affairs of the community he took a great interest in all that was going on.

Surviving him, besides his wife are ten children and a brother and a sister. They are Mrs. Gertrude Twedt of La Mesa, Calif., Bertram Sawyer, Le Grand, Mrs. Hannah Twedt, Salem, Ore., Mrs. Esther Brown, Tillamook, Ore., Arthur T. Sawyer, Tilman A. Sawyer, Mildred Sawyer and Sylvia Sawyer all of New York City, and Elizabeth and Tom who live at home. Abel Sawyer, a brother, lives in Long Beach, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Martha Anderson, lives in Leland, Ill.

The body will be taken to the Sawyer home Thursday morning preceding the funeral in order that Grinnell friends may call there.
