BASIL BRUSH RITES TODAY

J. Basil Brush, 86, of Johnston, formerly of Grinnell, died Monday evening at his home.

The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Harry Linnenbrink officiating. Organist was Joyce Wedlock, and pallbearers were Brian Brush, Carl Brush, David Brush, Gregory Brush, Steven Brush, Gary Geiger, Thomas Geiger and Michael Shanahan. The Vigil Service was conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home.

Burial was in the Calvary Section of Hazelwood Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

The son of Charles Edward and Sarah Ann Sharp Brush, he was born Sept. 6, 1895, near Chelsea. On June 11, 1919, he was married to Mabel Kenner in Brooklyn. They farmed for 42 years in Chelsea and Brooklyn areas before retiring in 1961 and moving to Grinnell.

Mr. Brush was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a former trustee of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn, a director of the Brooklyn Creamery and the Malcom Co-op, and a member of Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the American Legion, the World War I Barracks and the Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his children, Pauline Shanahan of Sarasota, Fla., Virginia Geiger of Edina, Minn., Stanley B. Brush of Peoria, Ill., and Donald J. Brush of Urbandale; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathryn Foran of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one brother, Thomas G. Brush; one sister, Mildred Himschoot; and one grandchild.
