FREDERICK AMOS HATCH

Frederick Amos Hatch was born in Chelsea, Vermont, Feb. 3, 1860. He died in Chicago, Ill., August 25, 1911, aged 51 years, 6 months, 22 days. He was a half brother of the late G.M.C. Hatch, having the same father, his mother being a second wife of his father. He came to Grinnell many years ago, and was, for a time, employed in the store of G.M. Hatch & Co. G.M.C. Hatch was the silent partner, the Co. in the firm. The older citizens here remember the Hatch store in the Hatch building, now occupied by J.H. McMurray & Co. Those who were acquainted with the firm of G.M. Hatch & Co. may remember a young clerk named Fred Hatch. He was a young man of unusual intelligence and strong character well esteemed by those who knew him best. With the push and energy of the Hatch blood, he went still further west and got employment on the Pacific Coast, a greater distance from here than we are west from the place of his birth. He came of a puritan ancestry who helped in the war of the Revolution to make this a free country. For the last several years he has been in the employ of the Carney Brothers of Chicago, until last October, when he became ill with sickness resulting in his death. He was never married and spent most of his life away from his kindred. One brother survives him, Mr. Ephraim Hatch, of San Jose, California.

When news came of his death, Evelyn, the daughter of Mrs. Kate Spencer, went to Chicago and returned with the body.

A brief service was held in the cemetery conducted by Prof. S.J. Buck.

The bearers were A.A. Foster, I.S. Bailey, Jr., H.F. Lanphere, M.W. Swisher, S.J. Pooley, and W.T. Moyle.
