April 1900

--The announcement that G.M.C. Hatch had died at one o'clock this morning, though not wholly unexpected comes as a shock to his many friends who have been accustomed to seeing his familiar figure on the streets. Mr. Hatch's thirty years in this city, most of them years of activity have given him a place in the hearts of Grinnell people. The funeral will be held at the residence of H.C. Spencer at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J.E. Corley.

The Grinnell (IA) Herald

--Gilbert Mavro C. Hatch was born in Chelsea, Orange county, Vermont, July 25th, 1827, and died in Grinnell, Iowa, at one o'clock a.m. April 10th, 1900, it being the 72nd year of his age. He was of sturdy Puritan stock, his father and grand-father having lived at Northfield, Vermont, whence his father removed to Chelsea and established the home where the deceased was born and lived till 1872. Mr. Hatch was an active business man and continued as such after he came to Grinnell up to about 11 years ago, when he retired from active business. He came to Grinnell with his wife and daughter in 1872. He was associated with his uncle Gilbert M. Hatch, in founding one of the large mercantile establishments in Grinnell, and was known as a successful merchant here for many years. For a few years he was associated with Michael Stephens in founding another business, which remains still in successful operation. Mr. Hatch never sought political preferment but endeavored to simply perform his duty in the unostentatious manner as characteristic of his nature. Of the Universalist faith, Mr. Hatch, when he married Edith M. Sawyer, of Norwich, Vermont, became an attendant upon the services of the Methodist Episcopal church, to which his support was given liberally the greater part of his life. A little over a year ago he lost his long time companion and altho greatly bereaved, he bore the same with fortitude. For several years he was a victim of progressive paralysis, which finally involved his entire nervous system, which, at the last brought a peaceful death for which he was fully prepared. An only daughter Mrs. H.C. Spencer, of this city, a brother Mr. Ephraim Hatch, of San Jose, California, a half brother, Fred A. Hatch, Portland, Oregon, and a sister, Mrs. M.A. Graham, of Waterloo, Iowa, survive him to cherish the memory of father and brother.
