EARL BEVINS

Earl Chester Bevins, 82, of Grinnell died Sunday, Oct. 30, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services were conducted Thursday at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lon L. Lewis officiating. Organist was Margaret Wheeler, and soloist was Bernice Jackson. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Bevins, Gene Cole.P.R. Papa, David Schultz and Dr. B.G. Wilfang.

The son of Robert and Ella Chester Bevins, he was born Sept. 14, 1912, in Harrisburg, Pa. He later moved to Lancaster, Wis., where he received his education He moved to Dubuque and later to Cedar Rapids and was employed as a sales clerk.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served with the 7th Air Force in Ahan and Saipan, leaving with the rank of staff sergeant.

He was married to Mary Baker May 20, 1945, in Honolulu, Hawaii. They returned to Cedar Rapids where Mr. Bevins was employed at Armstrong's. They later moved to Elkhart, Ind., where he worked as a sales representative for Grinnell Shoe Co. and owned and operated a shoe store. The family moved to Grinnell in 1958 and he worked as sales manager for the shoe company. He began working for Stadiums Unlimited here in the early 1970s and later worked for Southern Bleachers in Anniston, Ala. He retired in 1987 and returned to Grinnell.

Mr. Bevins was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife; three children, Robert of Des Moines, Bart of St. Paul, Minn., and Julie Eberbach of Norwalk; five grandchildren; and one brother, Harold. He was preceded in death by his parents.
