SERVICES HELDEthel A. Hans, 84, of Vinton died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 23 at the Luther Home for the Aged. She was a former resident of Grinnell.
Funeral services for Ethel Hans were held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. James P. Russell, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner.
Pallbearers were Loren D. Loupee, Carroll Anderson, James L. Hans, John W. Hans, Roy Moore, and James H. Paul. Honorary bearers were Harold Buck, Richard Hagedorn, Harold Mallicoat, Forrest Rusk, O.V. Swigart, Noel Taylor, Paul Voss and Clark Watkins. Burial was at the Newton Union Cemetery.
Born Aug. 28, 1894, near Kellogg, she was the daughter of Hans and Karina Anderson. She attended rural schools near the Kellogg family farm, and later graduated with the class of 1913 from North High School in Des Moines.
She married George T. Hans on Feb. 1, 1922, in Newton, and the couple farmed northeast of Newton until 1941, when they moved to a farm west of Brooklyn. In 1949 they moved to a farm northeast of Grinnell and in 1958 retired from the farm and moved into Grinnell.
Last September they moved to Vinton to be near their son.
While in Grinnell, she was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, the Matt Hughes Sunday school class and women's society of the church.
She is survived by her husband, George, of Country Gardens in Vinton; a son, Eldon J. Hans of Vinton; a daughter, Mrs.James (Shirley) Johnson of Toledo, Ohio; a brother, Lawrence W. Anderson of Kellogg; a sister, Mrs. Mary Eggert of Marshalltown; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Hannah Loupee, Halda Moore, Mae Paul and Carrie Hans.
