ROY ANDERSON

Roy Anderson, the son of Olena Engels and Rasmus Anderson, was born November 14, 1871, in Meland, Norway.

At the age of thirteen he came to America accompanied by his parents, making Chicago, Ill. their home. From a large family of thirteen there is only one surviving sister, Mrs. Margaret Carlson of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

He was married to Mary Larson May 24, 1897 in Chicago, Ill. The following year they moved to Grinnell, Iowa where he was engaged in painting and contracting for over fifty years. To this union were born six children, three passing on in infancy and three surviving, Robert L. and Edwin R. of Grinnell and Mrs. Dewey Clay of Newburg.

There are also five grandchildren, Mary Louise Anderson of Berkley, California, Robert, John and Caroline Anderson of Grinnell and Jolene Clay of Newburg, Iowa. Mrs. Anderson preceded her husband in death on Jan. 23, 1944. For the past seven years he made his home with his daughter and her family of Newburg, Iowa.

In his youth he was baptized in the Lutheran faith but during his active years in Grinnell attended the Methodist Church and was an active member of the original Bob Coutts Sunday school class. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and received a certificate of fifty-year membership on Dec. 6, 1951.

As a father, grandfather and friend he was always obliging, thinking of others more than of himself. His friends were numbered among the young as well as the old because of his deep concern and sincere interest in all people.

After three weeks illness he passed to his reward on June 30, 1956 at 7:28 p.m. at a local hospital in Grinnell, age 84 years, 7 months and 16 days.

Memorial services were held at the Smith Funeral Home by the Rev. John DeLong, Minister of the Methodist church. Organist was Mrs. Esther Auman. Flowerbearers were Mrs. Wayne Reams and Mrs. Don Sparks. Harley Binegar, Alfred Keese, Clarence Lacina, Edwin Pedersen, Raymond Schultz, and Donald Sparks served as pallbearers.

Masonic graveside services were conducted by Hermon Lodge No. 273 with F.M. Tomasek in charge.

Interment was at Hazelwood cemetery.
