RUSSELL EUGENE DENISON, 64

Russell Eugene Denison, 64, of Guernsey, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, at St. John's Lutheran Church, south of Victor, with the Rev. Nicholas Huelsman officiating.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Russell Denison Memorial Fund and mailed in the care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. 485, Victor, Iowa 52347.

Russell was born on Sept. 13 1948, in Dixon, Ill., to Russell and Betty Trotter Denison. He was raised in Torrance, Calif., and graduated from South High School. He continued his education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

On March 22, 1969, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Warren in Torrance, Calif. The couple later moved to Colorado where Russell raised and raced greyhounds.

Russell proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he was a patrol dog handler in Vietnam. Russell grew up working with dogs and as an adult he volunteered his time and dogs on search and rescue missions.

Russell retired from the Newton Correctional facility after 13 years of service.

He loved his family and friends. He worked hard at everything he did and was always willing to help others in their time of need. Russell enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

Russell is survived by his wife, Kathryn of 43 years; sons, Russell (Brooke) Denison of Keystone, and Lucas (Alice) Denison of Des Moines; daughter, Laura Denison of Des Moines; granddaughters, Tyra Denison of Knoxville and Ashlyn Denison of Des Moines; and grandson, Dylan Denison of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Penny.
