MR. BAILEY
RITES TODAYVan Buren Bailey, 92, of Des Moines, formerly of the Bethel area, died Tuesday afternoon at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services for Mr. Bailey will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Klein, pastor of the Bethel Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Mrs. Willard Heffner. Pallbearers will be Robert W. Ashby, Stan Ashby, Donald Hasselbrink, Gus Kaisand, Robert Moore, and Merle Sparks. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert T. Ashby, Oral Bailey, John Jelsma, and Charles Kaisand.
Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. Bailey's name may be made to the Van Buren Bailey Memorial Fund.
The son of John and Harriet Kingsley Bailey, he was born Aug. 14, 1883, near Searsboro. He attended rural school near his home and graduated from Grinnell High School. He was graduated from Grinnell College in 1907.
On June 26, 1918, he was married to Marjorie Cooper in Lamberton, Minn. The couple had two daughters. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey farmed in the Bethel area for 60 years. They moved to Des Moines in 1969.
Mr. Bailey was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church, the Bethel Grange and the Farm Bureau. He had also been a member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; two daughters, Mrs. Clair (Alice) Baker of Rte. 1, Grinnell, and Mrs. E. Wallace (Eleanor) Dick of Des Moines; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Lynn (Nellie) Gauze; and two brothers, Ora and Will Bailey.
