THOMAS S. EAMES

Thomas Stanley Eames, 58, of Gilman died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Knoxville.

An open house memorial reception was held Wednesday in Gilman. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Fuller, Darrell McGrew, Frank Wilcox, Willie Chedester, Bill Lynch and Ronald Retter. Interment of cremains will be held at a later date at Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell. Memorials may be directed to the Thomas Eames Memorial Fund c/o Smith Funeral Home PO Box 368, Grinnell IA 50112.

He was born April 12, 1948, in Grinnell, the son of Carroll (Bus) Owen and Ada Pearl Smith Eames. He attended school in the Grinnell Community School District, graduating in 1966, and also attended Iowa State University in Ames. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1968, serving during the Vietnam War. He later worked for Swift and Company in Marshalltown and the Ferguson Quarry in Ferguson, and was self employed for several years. In recent years he worked as a concrete finisher for Ray Evans Company in Tama; as an assistant welder in the pipeline industry during installation of a state-wide pipeline project; at EPC in Grinnell and for Manatts Inc. in Brooklyn. He also was a metal artisan whose work was displayed and sold at Farmhouse Gifts in Grinnell; the Quarry Depot in Quarry, and the Kathy Deines Art Gallery in Marshalltown. Due to ill health, he retired in May 2006.

He was united in marriage with Doris Ann Audas on June 30, 1998, at the Church of God in Lynnville.

He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Marjorie (Cookie) Cope and Josie Roe, both of Gilman; one daughter, Buffy Roberts of Chelsea; three step-sons, Ton Lynch, Phoenix, Ariz., Todd Lynch, Marshalltown, and Clay Jensen, Fayetteville, N.C. one step-daughter Carrie Chizek, Marshalltown; one grandchild and seven step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
