CLARENCE SCOBEE

Clarence Scobee, 96, of Grinnell died of pneumonia Wednesday, May 31, at Friendship Manor.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Wallace, pastor of the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church, officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud, and vocalists were Delmar and Norma Jean Sharp. Casket bearers were David, Jeff, Josh, Matt and Tom Dillman, Doug Edge, and Ben Hansen.

Masonic rites were conducted by members of the Gilman Masonic Lodge, with burial in Chester Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 13, 1903, in Clements, Kan., to John Henry and Nancy Ann White Scobee. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. In 1928, he began working as a lineman with Western Union and moved to Cedar Falls.

He was married to Ella Faye Rugg Dec. 7, 1929, in Cedar Falls. Mr. Scobee worked for 35 years as a machinist for the Viking Pump Company.

In 1967, they moved to the Grinnell area and farmed. Following Mrs. Scobee's death in 1995, he moved to Gilman. He had been a resident of Friendship Manor since 1998.

Mr. Scobee was a member of the Newburg-Chester Congregational Church and Masonic lodges in Gilman and Grinnell. He was a 50-year member of the Black Hawk Masonic Lodge of Cedar Falls and was a district Masonic lecturer.

Surviving are one daughter, Rosella Dillman of Gilman; two sisters, Fronie Freeborn of Florence, Kan., and Rose Murphy of Monet, Mo.; one brother, Tom of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one grandson; two sisters, Flora Mae and Janie; and five brothers, Frank, Ray, Bill, George and Johnny.
