JAMES E. MOYER

James E. Moyer, 84, of Grinnell died Sunday, Jan, 1, 2006, at Friendship Manor.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Jan. 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. William Reynolds, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist was Marilyn Kriegel. Pallbearers were his six grandsons, James, Jeremy, Arron, Brandon, Dominick and Derek Moyer. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the James E. Moyer Memorial Fund.

The son of John J. and Mildred B. Strong Moyer, he was born May 16, 1921, in Tama. He was raised on a farm near Malcom and was a graduate of Malcom High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, serving with the 13th Armored Division as a tank driver. He received two ronze stars for battles fought in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was married on Sept. 10, 1946, in Brooklyn to Mildred M. Cline. The couple made their home in Grinnell for several years where he was employed at Edwards Grocery on Fourth Avenue. They later farmed at several locations in Poweshiek County, retiring in 1983 after which they returned to Grinnell to make their home. He was employed at Lang Farm, then at Bates Flowers, retiring a second time in 2000.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn, then later of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell, as well as the Grinnell Elks Lodge and Grinnell American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Grinnell; four sons, Lyle of Plano, Texas, Michael of Ottumwa, Steven of Merrill, Wis., and Dennis of Oskaloosa; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild; six brothers, Charles (Bob) of Dubuque, Francis, Alan, Harold (PeeWee) and Roger, all of Grinnell, and Dean (Diz) of Aspen, Colo., and four sisters, Maxine (Sal) Osborn of Montezuma, Karol (Tootie) Gillian of Marshalltown, Mary Schmidt of Grinnell and Joy Lincoln of Stewart. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Arlene Pierce.
