HAZEL BLANCHE AXTELL

Hazel Blanche Axtell, 86, died Oct. 3, 2000 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral was in Deep River Oct. 6 at United Church with Pastor Boyd Sparks officiating. Rob Clower played "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, accompanied by Ellen Zimmerman.

Casket bearers were Brian Axtell, Bruce Axtell, Mark Axtell, Todd Axtell, Chris Blommers, Kurt Hall, Joe Gatton and Steve Jones.

She was buried in Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River with arrangements by Watts Funeral Home of Montezuma.

Memorials may be made to Grinnell Regional Hospice.

Mrs. Axtell was born June 28, 1914 in Estherville, the daughter of harry and Winnefred (Ruby) Fritz. On Feb. 2, 1935, she married Erwin Ogle Axtell in Cedar Rapids. The couple had three children, Blaine Allen, Charlie Erwin and Marca Jean.

Mrs. Axtell was a 65-year member of the Presbyterian Church and later, United Church of Deep River. She also belonged for more than 50 years to the Order of the Eastern Star, Mayflower and Lafayette chapters, where she held every office.

Mrs. Axtell was an avid fan of her grandchildren and traveled thousands of miles over the years to cheer them on in sports, even after the loss of her sight.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 25, 1968, one sister, Genieve Fritz, one brother, Kenneth and one son-in-law, Douglas Blommers.

Surviving are her children and their spouses, Blaine and Lillian Axtell of Spring, Texas; Charlie and Jean Axtell of Leesburg, Fla. and Marca and Chris Moode of Deep River; eight grandchildren, Brian, Bruce, Mark and Todd Axtell; Chris Blommers, Lynn Jones; Angela Hall and Jennifer Gatton; 13 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
