DOROTHY E. AXELL, 90

Dorothy E. Axtell, 90, of the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha passed away there on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007 of natural causes.

Graveside services will be at Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 1:30 p.m. followed by coffee time with the family at the Church of Christ. Watts Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy was born June 1, 1917, in Deep River, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Edgerton Butcher. She graduated from William Penn College and received her master's degree from the University of Iowa. Dorothy married Charles W. "Pete" Axtell on July 29, 1945, at Deep River. He died in 2001. Dorothy was a high school teacher and taught in Deep River-Millersburg, Tri-County and retired from the Montezuma school system. After retirement Dorothy and Pete moved to Fairfield Bay, Ark. and lived there for over 20 years. She was a member of Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Del (Jan) of Cedar Rapids and two daughters, Dee Soska of Cedar Rapids and Gae (Bill) Kroes of Pleasant Hill. She is also survived by one grandchil, Ross Soska; two step-grandchildren, Chris and Anne Robinson; one great-grandchild, Mason Soska; and one step-great-grandchild, Sophia Robinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband and an infant son.
