DESSA MARIE SCHERER

Dessa Marie Spooner Scherer, 95, died Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Francis Manor.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines with the Rev. Del Dawes of the Grinnell United Methodist Church officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Wray, Christopher Wray, Matthew Wray, James Ahrens, Joel Ahrens, Nathan Ahrens, Philip Carlisle, Gary Spooner, Michael Spooner, Steven Spooner, Micha Spooner and Steven Koehl. Honorary bearers were Carol Spooner Ahrens, Jo Spooner Wray, Christina Spooner Pawlitschek, Pamela Spooner Spells, Paige Carlisle, Morgan Spooner, Jordan Spooner, Beverly Carlson Koehl, Darcy Curl and Molly Wray. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Francis Manor Activity Fund.

She was born Sept. 28, 1904, in Grinnell, the daughter of L. William and Helen Hamor Spooner. She was a 1924 graduate of Grinnell High School and later received a teaching certificate from Iowa State University. She taught in rural schools near Grinnell for several years and also worked for the local telephone company. She was married to Beryl L. Scherer and the couple made their home in Des Moines where she was employed as a bookkeeper for a general contractor. She returned to Grinnell in 1992 and has been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 1994.

Survivors include two step-children Lester Scherer of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Martha Pease of Schenectady, N.Y.; three brothers, Clare Spooner of Montezuma and Ralph Spooner and Frank Spooner of Grinnell; and two sisters, Alice Spooner and Ruby Reilly, both of Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband Beryl and one sister Cecil Carlson.
