CLARE L. SPOONER

Clare L. Spooner, 90, of Grinnell died Friday, Sept. 13, at St. Francis Manor.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Pallbearers were James and Joel Ahrens; Gary and Michael Spooner; and Chris, Larry and Matthew Wray. Honorary bearers were Nathan Ahrens, Philip Carlisle, Steven Koehl, Joseph and Larry Shilman, Jonathan Spells and Micah and Steven Spooner.

The Smith Funeral Home handled arrangements.

The son of Lindsay William and Helen Mary Hamor Spooner, he was born Sept. 28, 1911, in Grinnell. He was a 1929 graduate of Grinnell High School. Mr. Spooner farmed for many years west of Grinnell and also assisted other area farmers. He retired in 1999 and had been a resident of St. Francis Manor since July 2000.

Surviving are a brother, Frank of Grinnell, and a sister, Ruby Reilly of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bill; and three sisters, Alice Spooner, Dessa Scherer and Cecil Carlson.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Manor Activity Center, the Newton Animal Rescue League or the Trees Forever program at Hazelwood Cemetery.
