SERVICES HELD

Funeral services for L. William Spooner, 95, of Rte. 4, Grinnell, who died Tuesday, Mar. 12, at the Grinnell General Hospital, were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John W. McCallum, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating.

Organist was Edward H. Bohstedt, and pallbearers were Jim Ahrens, Jerry Duey, Jim Parrott, Mike Spooner, Steve Spooner and Larry Wray. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Child, Virgil Doud, Floyd Eichhorn, Donovan Evans, T.J. Moore, C.M. Pilgrim, Harold Stanley and Clair Strand. Flower bearers were Mrs. George Brown, Mrs. Donovan Evans and Mrs. Harold Stanley.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemeery.

The son of Luke P. and Nettie Davison Spooner, he was born Aug. 15, 1878, in the Westfield community of Poweshiek County. He attended rural schools in the Maple Grove community southeast of Grinnell. He and his family made their home in Westfield until 1884 when they moved to Maple Grove and farmed.

On Nov. 25, 1903, he was married to Helen M. Hamor. The couple had seven children: Mrs. Dessa Scherer of Des Moines; Alice M. Spooner of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. H.J. (Ruby) Reilly of Denver; Clare L. Spooner of Rte. 4, Grinnell; Ralph "Bill" Spooner of Rte. 4, Grinnell; Frank S. Spooner of Rte. 3, Grinnell; and Mrs. Cecil Carlson of Denver.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Spooner farmed in the Maple Grove community. Mrs. Spooner died June 21, 1970, and Mr. Spooner continued to live on the farm where he had made his home for more than 70 years.

He is survived by his seven children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife;; one grandchild, Mrs. Patty Fraker; one great-grandchild, Michael William Fraker; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Holden and Mrs. Susie Smith; and one brother, John L. Spooner.
