HARRY MCMAINS TAYLOR

Harry McMains Taylor, 90, of Grinnell died January 31, 2014, at his home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 6, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Dr. Dondrea Walker, First Baptist Church, officiating. Organist will be Denise Baustian and vocalist Milton Severe. Honorary bearers will be John Benson, Chris and Rodney Dale, Mark Horine and Jeffrey, John and Tom Taylor. Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 7, at the Derby Cemetery, Derby, Iowa.

Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Baptist Church in Grinnell.

Harry was born April 23, 1923, in Derby, Iowa the son of Carl E. and Erma McMains Taylor. He grew up in Derby and was a 1941 graduate of Derby High School. Following high school, he worked on the family farm and was employed at a local general store. He later was a 1951 graduate of William Penn College in Oskaloosa.

He was employed for 35 years at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company and had traveled throughout the state as an insurance adjustor. He was an active member of the Grinnell Rotary Club and First Baptist Church. He made his home for 14 years near the Jacob Krumm Preserve, west of Grinnell and later in Grinnell. After he retired, he enjoyed wintering in Edinburgh, Texas and while there he was active with a local church in his retirement village.

On October 24, 1992 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Dale of Embarrass, Minnesota and the couple lived in Grinnell during the summers and Edinburgh in the winters. Following her death on October 9, 2000, he was married to Asenath "Senie" Glascock of Greenfield, Indiana in 2002 and they also enjoyed living in Grinnell and Edinburgh. She passed away on September 12, 2012.

Harry was a person of principle and held a great love for his family. He held a passion for nature and while living near the Krumm Nature Preserve he was well educated as a naturalist. He enjoyed history, reading and gardening. The vegetables he gardened were raised to share with family and friends. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed talking about the games they played.

Survivors include his brother, David (Ruth) Taylor of Centerville; a sister-in-law, Audrey Taylor of Chariton; 3 nieces; 3 nephews; and 12 step-children. he was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Evelyn and second wife, Senie; and one brother, Carl Taylor.
