JOHN F. MAZE

The Rev. John F. Maze, 79, retired Presbyterian minister, died Sunday, Aug. 22, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell, with the Rev. Michael D. Smith officiating. Organist was Barbara Lien, and pallbearers were David Creps, Warren Fogel, Lyle Heishman, John Peak, Norman Schoreder and Herman Wax.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The son of George and Dora Schreiber Maze, he was born Oct. 19, 1913, near Carroll. He was raised on his parents' dairy farm and was a 1932 graduate of Carroll High School. He was a 1937 graduate of Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and a 1941 graduate of the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.

He was ordained in 1941 and served as pastor of the Malcom Presbyterian Church until 1943. He then served the First Presbyterian Church in State Center where he was a scoutmaster. He also was elected moderator of the Presbytery of Waterloo and was chairman of ministerial relations for the Presbytery of Northwest Iowa.

After serving seven more churches in Iowa, Nebraska and Idaho, he returned to Malcom in December 1972 and served the Malcom-Sheridan parish until his retirement in 1977.

He was married to Mildred J. Abell Oct. 6, 1948, in Shell Rock.

While in Grinnell, he was involved with the Poweshiek Council on Aging, Hospice Grinnell and the Grinnell Ministerial Association. He was also active in the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell, the Peace Committee of Grinnell and the Peace Committee of the Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one brother, George.
