VIRGIL L. GOODRICH

Funeral services were held Monday morning, Jan. 10, at the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn for Virgil L. Goodrich, 89,of Marengo and Brookhaven Nursing Home, who died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, in Grinnell Regional Medical Center. The Rev. Ronald Van Heukelom officiated.

The organist was Marilyn Kriegel and the soloist was Rhonda Klaassen. Special selections were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." Honorary casket bearers were Vicki Legvold, Merily Atwood, Diane Thornton, Kelly Miller, Lisa Mulholland, Janet Faas and Danean Bartachek. Casket bearers were Greg Rhoads, John Bartachek, Steven Goodrich, LaVern Bartachek, Mark Goodrich, Kevin Goodrich and Scott Goodrich. Interment was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery.

Virgil Llewellyn Goodrich, son of Charlie and Harriet Garretson Goodrich, was born May 9, 1910, near Malcom. He received his education in a rural school and Malcom High School, graduating in 1929.

On Nov. 24, 1930, Virgil married Mary Camillia Van Tomme in the home of his parents north of Malcom. They lived and farmed in the Brooklyn-Malcom area until 1965 when they moved to Marengo. He worked for Goodrich Masonry, his son's business, until he retired in 1990.

He was active in 4-H clubs for many years and was a member of the judging team.

He was preceded in death by his wife on June 22, 1996; a son, Wayne; one brother, Marion; two sisters, Viola Heath and Xavie Richman; one great-granddaughter, Jill Legvold; and one great-grandson, Trent Miler.

Survivors include his son, Gerald Goodrich and his wife, Mercedes, of Marengo, two daughters and their husbands, Alverda and Joseph Rhoads of Collins and Shirley and Gene Bartachek of Brooklyn; two brothers, Lotus Goodrich and Charles Goodrich, both of Malcom; one sister, Olevia Lidtka of Malcom; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Nevenhoven Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
