LAURA LACAEYSE, 90

Laura Lacaeyse, 90, of rural Montezuma, died Monday afternoon, March 23, 1998 at Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn after a brief illness.

Services were Thursday, March 26 at Nevenhoven Funeral Home with Rev. Fr. Joseph Rogers officiating.

Honorary pall bearers were Jim VanErsvelde, Jerry VanErsvelde, Jim Criswell, Edward Henry, Merle Rietzler and Paul Hawkins. Casket bearers were Gene Lacaeyse, Carl Lacaeyse, Dean Lacaeyse, Mike Donachie, John Donachie, Tim Kibbee, Gary Meseck and Joel Lacaeyse.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Laura VanTomme was born November 14, 1907 in Kewanee, Ill., the daughter of Emil and Clamence Buegenjon VanTomme. At an early age, she and her family moved to Poweshiek County where she received her education in county schools and at Deep River school.

She married Alfred (Fred) Lacaeyse, on November 18, 1926 in Marengo. The couple farmed for many years in Poweshiek County.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Poweshiek County Farm Bureau and for more that 70 years, a member of the Social Circle Club. She enjoyed crocheting for her family and friends, working in her flower garden and caring for her many cats and her dog, Sparkle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred on December 17, 1981; her daughter, Evelyn Donachie; a brother, Camiel VanTomme and a sister, Mary Goodrich.

She is survived by a son, Marvin and his wife, Delores of Montezuma; a brother, Rene VanTomme of Montezuma; seven grandchildren, Gene, Carol, Carl and Dean Lacaeyse and Mike, David and John Donachie; 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
