RAYMOND L. PULS, JR.

Raymond L. Puls, Jr., 65, of Malcom died Nov. 11, 2011, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Jason Friesen, Crossroad Community Church in Grimes, officiating. Pallbearers were Luke and Zach Gay, and Harley, Ron, Tanner, Travis and Tyler Puls. Honorary bearers were Roger Griffith, and Jacob and Levi Gay. Burial with military rites, followed at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.

Visitation was held Sunday at Smith Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Malcom Fire Department.

Ray was born March 12, 1946, in Grinnell, the son of Raymond Lee and Betty Mae Wolfe Puls. He was raised in Grinnell and later Malcom. He was a 1964 graduate of BGM High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in South Korea.

On Jan. 31, 1970, he was united in marriage with Shirley Ann Alertsen, in Omaha, Neb. They were later divorced in 1977. He married Pamela Lou Gay on March 18, 1978, in Montezuma and the couple made their home in Malcom.

Ray was employed at Amana Refrigeration, Bishop Pools and Lennox in Des Moines, and later for 17 years at Farmhand. In 1995, he began working for Victor Manufacturing and retired on April 29, 2011. He served on the Malcom City Council for 16 years, a member of the Malcom Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years, and a member of the Malcom American Legion.

Ray enjoyed mowing, his flower and vegetable gardens, western movies, trains, traveling to the mountains in Wyoming, playing cards with his family, and anything John Deere.

Survivors include his wife, Pam of Malcom; three children, Rebecca Skow of Grimes, Jono Puls of Brooklyn and Ben Puls of Brooklyn; six grandchildren; five brothers, Roger of Grinnell, Ronald and Rick of Malcom, Rodney of Brooklyn and Russell of Grinnell; and three sisters, Debbie Van Auken, Rhonda Puls, and DeAnna Hoien, all of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
