MALCOM MAN DIES
IN MONDAY MISHAP

A 22-year-old Malcom man was killed Monday night when he apparently lost control of the car he was driving and crashed into a bridge.

Dead is Kenneth Earl Alertsen who, according to authorities, lost control of his car at about 8:45 p.m. a quarter of a mile north of the junction of Highways 6 and 63. He was alone in the car at the time of the mishap.

Poweshiek County Sheriff Max Allen said the man died at the scene, bringing to three the number of persons dead as the result of traffic accidents in Poweshiek County so far this year.

OBITUARY

Kenneth Alertsen was born June 11, 1949, the son of Ruby and the late Earl Alertsen. He had lived on a farm in rural Malcom. A graduate of Montezuma High School, he spent two years in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Malcom Methodist Church.

On May 22, 1970, he was married to Carmen Gilbert. The couple had one son, Earl William Alertsen. The family lived in Toledo for awhile, then moved to Malcom. He was employed as a machinist at the Oskaloosa Engineering and Manufacturing Company.

Mr. Alertsen is survived by his wife Carmen; his son Earl William; his mother Ruby Alertsen of Pleasantville; three sisters, Mrs. Jack (Phyllis) Smith of Malcom, Mrs. Ray (Shirley) Puls Jr. of Pleasantville, and Mrs. Ray (Rose Mary) Allbee Jr. of Kirksville, Mo.; and a brother, Wesley Alertsen, a student in Kirksville. He was preceded in death by his father Earl, Jan. 27, 1964, and his grandparents.

SERVICES

Funeral services for Mr. Alertsen were held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Malcom Methodist Church, with the Rev. Austin G. Rugger officiating. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

Military graveside services were conducted by members of the Brooklyn American Legion.

Organist was Joan Schneekloth, and serving on the flower committee were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McKeag and Mr. and Mrs. Merland Plantz. Pallbearers were Raymond Cowman, Brett Griffith, Roger Griffith, Jim Schlesselman, Roger Puls, and Dennis Maschmann.

The James-Schalinske Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
