THIS MORNINGJohn L. Alertsen, 84, died at his home at 500 Broad St. here this morning (Monday).
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday from the James-Schalinske Funeral Home. The Rev. Chester C. Custer, pastor of the Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will be in Hazelwood cemetery.
The son of Lars and Helena Alertsen, he was born on Dec. 14, 1878, at Lisbon, Ill. He was graduated from the schools of that community and was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran faith.
As a young man he moved to the Malcom community where he was engaged in farming. On July 1, 1903, he was united in marriage with Clara Larsen at the home of her parents near Malcom. They farmed in the Malcom area until their retirement 17 years ago, when they moved to Grinnell to make their home.
Survivors include his widow Clara; a daughter, Mrs. John (Anna) Wiley of Malcom; a son, Earl of Malcom; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one brother, Len of Lisbon, Ill.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Orville and Clinton; his parents;; and five sisters and three brothers.

FOR JOHN ALERTSENFuneral services for John L. Alertsen, 84, of Grinnell, were held Wednesday afternoon from the James-Schalinske Funeral Home.
Mr. Alertsen died at his home Monday morning.
Officiating at the services was the Rev. Chester C. Custer, pastor of the Methodist church. Organ music was by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner.
Serving on the flower committee were Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Halstead and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Jensen. Pallbearers were Don Larsen, Ernest Larsen, Harvey Jensen, Keith Halstead, Leslie Alertsen and Kenneth Halstead.
Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.
