IN MONTEZUMA

Clarence Edwin Smith, 72, died at his home in Wolcott Mar. 22 at 4 a.m. He had worked the previous day. For 30 years he was employed in the Scott county treasurer's office.

Service was Sunday afternoon in the Keswick Methodist church. Don Ridenour assisted the Rev. Dwight C. Bonham, Methodist minister of Keswick. The soloist was Ken DeBont, who sang "Abide With Me" and "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by Mrs. Dwight C. Bonham, organist. Casket bearers were: Clarence Wilhite, Sherman Moore, Virgil Fridley, E.M. Wilson, Homer Bender, and Clarence Bowman.

Clarence Edwin Smith was born July 16, 1889, the son of George T. and Jennie Lynn Smith near Montezuma. He was married to Golda R. Greene Dec. 24, 1909, at Keswick, and to them were born four children: Cireta, Mrs. Rene Younkin of Davenport; Orville Smith of Davenport; Ardis, Mrs. Delmar Hoepner of Davenport; and Arlene, Mrs. Don Heefner of Des Moines.

He is survived y his wife and companion of 53 years; 8 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Nora Mikesell of Keswick, and a brother Fred Smith, north of Keswick.

Clarence was born on the farm now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ketels, south of Montezuma on Highway 63. He was a cousin of Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Meldrem, Mrs. Ben Sharer and Cliff D. Smith.
