Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at the Presbyterian church in Hayfield, Minn., for Mrs. Jay D. Smith, 86 who died at her Hayfield farm home Christmas day. Rev. Glenn Atchison officiated.

The former Eunice Palmer was born Nov. 18, 1878, at Forest Home near Montezuma, the daughter of William and Helena Palmer. She grew to womanhood at the place of her birth.

In 1901 she was married to Jay D. Smith, and the couple lived in the Montezuma area until 1913 when they moved to Hayfield. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Presbyterian church of Hayfield.

Among the survivors are her husband, two sons, Paul of Hayfield and Earl of St. Paul; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Nieces and nephews in the Montezuma community include Mrs. Sam E. Smith, Mrs. Ben Sharer, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Meldrem, and Cliff Smith.

She was the last of her family of six children including a twin brother. Pallbearers were Orville Jacobson, Percy Janes, Aden Throndoon, Richard Moe, Mel DeVriendt, and Fred Kruger. Interment was at Fairview cemetery.
