JAY D. SMITH, 91,
DIES IN MINNESOTA

Funeral services for a native of Montezuma, Jay D. Smith, 91, were held November 26 at the First Presbyterian Church, Hayfield, Minn., with the Rev. Chester Ahrens officiating.

Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Hayfield.

Mr. Smith, a Hayfield farmer for 50 years, passed away November 23 at the Fairview Nursing Home at Dodge Center where he had been a patient for several weeks. In addition to farming, he served as township assessor for 26 years.

The son of George and Henrietta Smith, he was born at Montezuma June 21, 1877. He married the former Eunice Palmer on May 15, 1901, and they moved to the Hayfield area in 1913.

Survivors include two sons, Paul of Hayfield and David of St. Paul; one sister, Mrs. Mary Sheley of Anita, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and Montezuma relatives - Mr. and Mrs. Ross Meldrem, Mr. and Mrs. Marion Palmer and Cliff Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice; eight brothers; one grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
