RITES WEDNESDAY

Austin Marvin Olson, 72, a former Grinnell resident who lived at the Iowa Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown, passed away Monday morning at Veterans' Hospital in Des Moines.

He was the son of Ole Paul and Carrie Johnson Olson and was born in Grinnell Jan. 13, 1896. He attended the Grinnell schools and later enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served overseas in France with Company F of the 161st Infantry during World War I.

Mr. Olson was a member of the Veterans of World War I, Marshall County Barracks 1104; the American Legion Post No. 46 in Marshalltown; and the V.F.W. Post 839 in Marshalltown.

He is survived by a brother, Henry Olson of Montezuma; and three sisters, Pearl Olson of Montezuma, Mrs. Roscoe (Ethel) Dempster and Mrs. Hugh (Ella) Murdock, both of California. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as his aunts, Mrs. Theo. Olson and Mrs. Ellen Olson of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for Austin Olson were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 31) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne A. Shireman, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner.

Pallbearers included August Kelm, Earl Churness, Ed Hartzer, Leo Stewart, Martin Springer, and Ed Marcus, all from the Iowa Soldiers' Home. Graveside rites were conducted by W.K. Richardson, commander and Jack Day, chaplain, and members of American Legion Post No. 53. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
