ALMA F. BATES

Alma F. Bates, 90, of Newton died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at her home.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Susan Leathem, chaplain of Grinnell Regional Hospice, officiating. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Her family will receive friends at Depot Crossing Restaurant following the services. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home Friday beginning at 12 noon with family members present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association in care of Smith Funeral Home. She was born May 24, 1916, in Mount Pisgah, Ky., to Isaac and Bonnie Smith Sharp. At the age of 11 months she moved with her parents to Grinnell where she was raised and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1934. She was married on Feb. 28, 1937, to Wendall Edwin Bates in Des Moines. The couple lived in Grinnell, Minneapolis, New York City and Waterloo before moving to an acreage near Newton in 1960.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, family genealogy, traveling, computer technology and planning high school reunions.

She is survived by one son Tom Bates of Grapevine, Texas; one daughter Laura Yorburg of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; one sister Opal Lusk of Des Moines, and two brothers, Floyd Sharp of Grinnell and James Sharp of Newton. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister Doris Krumm.
