CHAMP DELK

Champ Delk, 83, of Grinnell died Sunday, July 31, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harley Schull, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Organist was Margaret Wheeler, and pallbearers were Jack Delk Jr., LeRoy Delk, Nick Etter, Doyle Hoover, Edwin Richardson and Ralph Simpson.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. A Champ Delk Memorial Fund has been established.

The son of Joe and Mary Ipock Delk, he was born Feb. 11, 1911, in Jamestown, Tenn. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school near his home. He moved with his family to Searsboro in 1930.

He was married to Dorothy Hoover July 16,5 1942, in Newton. They lived in Grinnell where he worked for Kearney Coal and Seed Co. and later with Midwest Mfg. in Kellogg. He began working for the Maytag Co. in 1951 where he remained until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of the United Auto Workers.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Marlene Delk of Grinnell; three grandchildren; two brothers, Sherman of Jamestwon, Tenn., and Sterling of Newton; and one sister, Monnie Dowell of Lenexa, Kan.
