Helen M. Bell, 89, of the Sheridan community died of cancer Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Sheridan United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Melinda R. Cree and Howard Lord officiating. Organist was Barbara Graham, and pallbearers were Charles Anthony, Robert Bell, Lester Graff, Raymond Graham, Ross Mintle, Donald Parker, Kenneth Pearce and Robert Weitzell.

Burial was in the Sheridan cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell in charge of arrangements. Memorials in Mrs. Bell's name may be made to the Sheridan United Methodist Church.

The daughter of George and Catherine Maxwell Pearce, she was born March 14, 1901, in the Westfield community south of Grinnell. She attended rural schools and graduated from Grinnell High School. She also attended Grinnell College and William Penn College.

She was married to Clarence V. Bell Sept. 6, 1926, in Nashua. The couple lived in Brooklyn, later moving to Westfield and Ewart. Since 1944 they had lived on a farm in Sheridan Township. For the past two years, Mrs. Bell had been a resident of the Bethesda Care Center in Toledo.

She was a member of the Sheridan United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Sheridan Grange.

Surviving are her husband; four sons, Gerald of Malcom, Donald of Tipton, Loren of Hesperia, Calif., and Larry of Newton; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard Pearce of Pella. She was preceded in death by a son, Howard; five brothers, Herbert, Wendall, Harold and two in infancy; and a sister, Alyce Pearce.
