FRIDAY RITES AT
MAYFLOWER HOME
FOR FLORA SMITH

Mrs. Flora Smith,86, a resident of Mayflower Home, died Tuesday noon at a local hospital following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Kiesel Chapel in Mayflower Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Ernest Starr and the Rev. Ralph Beebe.

Pianist will be Ruth Campbell. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery at Cedar Rapids with James-Schalinske Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Charles and Susan Curtis Hoover, she was born Oct. 14th, 1879, at Quasqueton, Iowa.

She was a graduate of Lennox College and in 1900 was united in marriage with Richard C. Smith who practiced medicine in Troy Mills and Cedar Rapids until his death in 1908. Following the death of her husband she moved to Walker, Iowa, and made her home there for 10 years until her daughter graduated from high school.

She and her daughter both attended Northwestern University and there she received her masters degree in music. She taught for 18 years at Grinnell College and also for two seasons at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. She conducted European tours in the summer.

Mrs. Smith and her daughter, Jean, made their home together in New York City for a number of years. Her daughter was the head of the men's fashion department of Esquire magazine. After the death of her daughter she moved to Grinnell to reside at Mayflower Home.

Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. George Schlatter of Sun City, Cal., and Eilleen Faginkrantz of Las Vegas, Nev.
