*MERLE ARMENT SERVICES HELD

Merle R. Arment, 83, of rural Searsboro died Saturday afternoon, Sept. 4, at Embassy Manor in Newton.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. James P. Russell, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Grinnell, officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Darrel Arment, Gerald Arment, Harold Arment, Leonard Arment, Leslie Beason and James R. Hanus. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of George W. and Nellie Fleener Arment, he was born Aug. 30, 1899, in Poweshiek County. He attended rural school.

On Aug. 10, 1921,, he was married to Blanche I. Wood in the Blue Point Community south of Grinnell. The couple farmed in Poweshiek County.

Mr. Arment is survived by his wife; his children, Dorothy Niemants of Grinnell, Mildred Cogley of Grinnell, Veda Reedy of Malcom, Eugene Arment of Searsboro and Charles Arment of Grinnell; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, G. Austin Arment of Montour. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Howard, Clifford, Basil, Francis and John Arment; and three sisters, Daisy Beason, Geraldine Hanus and Ethyl Lane.
