BASIL ARMENT
SERVICES HELDBasil Arment, 72, of Marshalltown died Sunday evening (Jan. 20) at the Medicenter in Des Moines, following an extended illness.
The son of George and Nellie Fleener Arment, he was born Sept. 4, 1901, at Searsboro. He received his education in Ewart and Searsboro communities' rural schools.
On Sept. 16, 1926, he was married to Esther Gillespie at Tama. The couple lived in Montour, Washington state, Kellogg and Grinnell since 1947. Mr. Arment operated the Arment Plumbing and Heating Co. until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his first wife on Jan. 31, 1963. He was married to Esther Bremner Dec. 14, 1963, in Grinnell, and they made their home in Marshalltown. Mr. Arment was a member of the Moose Lodge of Marshalltown.
Survivors include his wife Esther; a daughter, Mrs. Keith (Charlotte) Bailey of Des Moines; two sons, Gerald and Duane, both of Grinnell; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five brothers, Francis of Grinnell, Howard of Fort Collins, Colo., Merle of Searsboro, John of Toledo, and Austin of Montour; a sister, Ethel Lane of New Sharon; four stepchildren, Mrs. Paul Robinson of Saudi Arabia, Mrs. Ray Langdon of Roswell, N.M., George H. Bremner of Alamagordo, N.M., and Earl Dean Bremner of Downers Grove, Ill.; twelve step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a daughter, Lucie Belle Lawson; two sisters, Geraldine Hanus and Daisey Beason; and an infant brother and sister.
Funeral services for Mr. Arment were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 23) at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home, with the Rev. Hugh A. Shiveley, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and serving on the flower committee were Marilyn Fontinel and Lucile Garbison. Pallbearers were Eugene Arment, George Beason, Terry Garbison, John Wyant, Jim Hanus and Darrell Arment.
Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
