Doris McMurray McKay, a former resident of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2006. Arrangements are currently being made for memorial services to occur after Jan. 1, 2007 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Doris was born in Grinnell on Sept. 11, 1921, moved to Brooklyn in 1928, and graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1939. She received her business degree in Chilicothe, Mo. where she met and married A. Lamar McKay in 1942.
In 1942, she and Lamar moved to Washington, D.C. where Lamar enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent overseas. They later moved to Albuquerque in 1947. She worked for the Department of Defense for over 50 years and was taken to Washington, D.C. and honored with a special award for her 50 years of superior service as an executive secretary.
Doris retired in 2002 and continued to enjoy her friends and association with the New Mexico Jazz Society. She loved biographical books and crossword puzzles, and thoroughly enjoyed visiting New York City several years in a row in the 1990s. She returned to Brooklyn in 2004 for her 65th high school reunion and was delighted to see her former classmates.
Doris was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by two daughters Patricia A. McKay of Albuquerque, N.M. and Karen Dewees-Lee and husband, Jeff of Los Alamos, N.M.; grandson, Todd Ray Dewees of Albuquerque, N.M., two brothers, Arthur Ray McMurray and his wife, Doris of Helena, Mont., and Robert McMurray and his wife, Ann of Lexington, Ky.
