Rex Thompson, 68, of Grinnell died Sunday, March 21, 2010, at his home.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 24, at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor emeritus of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Honorary bearers were James and John Thompson, Keith Richards, Jerry Neal, Brent Plowman and Tom Enlow. Memorials may be made to the Rex Thompson Memorial Fund.
He was born June 30, 1941, in Iowa City, the son of Oren Kirby and Colleen Rexroat Thompson. He was raised in the Newton area, attending rural school in Jasper County. He was united in marriage with Linda K. Springer on June 20, 1970, in Newton. They resided in Newton, then moved to Grinnell in 1974. He had been employed at Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg and Miracle Recreation in Grinnell. In 1983 he began working for the maintenance department of the City of Grinnell, retiring in 1993.
He is survived by his wife Linda of Grinnell; his mother Colleen of Newton; his sons and daughters James Thompson of Grinnell, Lola Richards of Fort Dodge, John Thompson of Grinnell and Shandy Tuttle of Kellogg; one brother, Rich Thompson of Newton; three sisters, Sandy Bird and Rena Miller of Newton and Linda Long of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, John Thompson.
