Julia James White of Winchester, Vermont, died at her home April 21, according to word received here from her husband, J.W. White.

Julia James was born in Scott county, Iowa, in 1865, the daughter of Harriet Ricker and John K. James. The family moved to Grinnell when Julia was a small child, in order to be near the college moved here from Davenport a few years earlier. True to her cultural background, Julia became a leading spirit in her neighborhood, in church activities, and in the social and literary interests of the community. She was one of five to organize the club now known as "Searchlights," of which but one charter member now remains, Mrs. Kate Harriman of Pomona, Cal., the others being Mrs. Morrison and Mrs. McIntosh, cousins of Julia, and Mrs. May Child, a kindred spirit.

For some years Julia was employed in the office of the then Morrison-McIntosh glove factory. After her parents' death, she made her home with her sister, Hattie, in Kansas City. Here she was married in 1907 to Mr. J.W. White, moving then to East Corinth, Vermont, and some years later to Winchester.

It is fitting to recall, in connection with Julia's passing, the old home on south Main street, the John K. James place for many years, children's children returning to it to go to school and college; the gatherings of children (Busy Bees) in the living room on Sunday afternoons, the neighborhood picnics in the yard on the Fourth of July; croquet and swings maintained throughout the summer months for the benefit of neighbors' children; the surrounding hedge of evergreen which seem to emphasize the friendliness and the hospitality of the people and the place and be an in- ( rest of this paragraph is missing...)

In 1905 Julia brought her sister here for burial beside the parents in Hazelwood. Julia was buried in the Vermont home of the Jameses before they came to Iowa.
