WAYNE SIMERMAN

Wayne A. Simerman, 78, of Grinnell died of lung cancer Monday, Feb. 7, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Stewart officiating. Organist was Denise Baustian, and harmonicaist was Madison Tomfeld.

Casket bearers were Ken Dutemple, John England, Don Hudnutt, C.L. "Duke" McCurry, Jim Rose and Gene Zell. Honorary bearers were Victor Phippen, Bill Rusk, Jack Smothers and Paul Strovers.

Military rites were conducted by members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial unit, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.

He was born in Washington, Iowa, and attended public schools there. The family moved to Downer's Grove, Ill., where he graduated from high school.

He served with the 2nd Marine Division in the South Pacific during World War II. He then returned to Downer's Grove and worked as a livestock buyer and a truck driver.

He was married to Ruby James Monson June 30, 1962, in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple lived in Grinnell, and he worked as a driver for the Ruan Corporation and for Kroblin Trucking Co. They moved to Marshalltown, returning to Grinnell in 1981.

Mr. Simerman was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Elks Lodge and the I.O.O.F. Lodge. He was past vice commander of the Iowa American Legion and served as post commander of Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 in Grinnell.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Susan Temple of Ducktown, Tenn.; two stepsons, Greg Monson of Sioux City and Robert Alsdorf of Des Moines; two brothers, John and Bill; five grandchildren; two step-grandsons; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Wayne III.
