Ruby Simerman, 85, of 1628 Prairie St., Grinnell, died Sunday, June 2, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Grinnell First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Stewart officiating. Organist will be Denise Baustian, and casket bearers will be John England, C.L. McCurry and Harold, Jim, John and Keith Rose. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at noon Friday.
She was born March 28, 1917, in Albia to George and Isabella James. She was raised in Albia and graduated from high school there. She taught school following her education.
She moved to Grinnell in 1955 and worked for the Department of Human Services for over 30 years.
She was married to Wayne A. Simerman June 30, 1962, in Albert Lea, Minn. They lived in Grinnell.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as president of the Iowa State American Legion Auxiliary. She also was an active volunteer for various community projects.
Surviving are two sons, Greg Monson of Sioux City and Robert Alsdorf of Des Moines, and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one stepson, Allen Simerman; one stepdaughter, Susan Temple; one brother, George W. James; and one daughter, Rosalie James.
Memorial contributions may be directed to her church or to the American Legion Iowa Foundation.
