GRACE S. HAYS

Grace S. Hays, daughter of Daniel and Susan Weller Hays, was born January 1, 1876, on the Hays farm one mile north of Chester Center. Miss Hays lived there until 1904 when she moved with her parents to Grinnell. She attended district school in Chester and the academy and conservatory at Grinnell College. At the age of ten Grace joined the Sonora Methodist church and was a faithful supporter of all church activities throughout her entire life. Her employment was in the millinery and ready-to-wear sales in Grinnell until her retirement four years ago. Her long association with the public had given her a host of friends. Since her retirement she had fulfilled her love for traveling by visiting her many friends and relatives in various parts of the country. She had been in failing health for the past year, but the immediate cause of her death was a stroke suffered in her sleep Wednesday morning, October 23. Miss Hays was removed to a local hospital where she passed away at 6 p.m. without regaining consciousness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers--Joseph W. and Charles W., and two sisters--Sophie, who died in infancy, and Rosa D., long a resident of Grinnell.

Surviving her is one brother, Harvey G. Hays of Broken Arrow, Okla.; three nieces--Mrs. Clarence Sweeney of Michigan City, Ind.; Mrs. H. Thomas Cavanaugh of South Port, Conn., and Mrs. Lehrl Fritz of Grinnell; three nephews--Fred Hays of Bartlesville, Okla.; Dan Hays of Hawthorne, Calif., and Bert Hays of Brooklyn, N.Y. Also surviving are seven grand nephews and six grand nieces.

Miss Hays was a member of the W.S.C.S. of the Methodist church, Soroptimists, O.E.S., D.A.R, and D.U.V.

Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.
