CLAUDE CROSS, 71,
DIES SUDDENLY

Claude B. Cross, 71, Grinnell, died suddenly at a local hospital Friday morning following a brief illness and hospitalization.

Funeral services were held this afternoon (Monday) from the Smith Funeral Home with Dr. G.S. Bruland, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Vocal music was provided by Mrs. Noel Taylor, accompanied by Mrs. Willard Heffner at the organ.

Pallbearers were Jim McNally, Bernard Young, Robert Lincoln, Gene Hlavka, Bob Nadonly and Paul Labieniec. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by members of Hermon Lodge of Grinnell. Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Mr. Cross was born Jan. 16, 1890, at Sheldon, Mo., the son of John and Sara Earle Cross. Later, he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Kansas State College, Manhattan, Kan., and completed work for his doctorate at the University of Nebraska.

On May 17, 1914, at Topeka, Kan., he was united in marriage with Effie Matilda Clawson and to this union were born three children: Mrs. Harland (Beth) Daughty and Dr. Claude B. Cross, both of Arlington, Va., and Albern L. Cross of Grimes.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren; one brother, John W. Cross of Washington, D.C.; and three sisters -- Mrs. Ethel Cross Partridge of Emporia, Kan., Mrs. Florence Cross Schutte of Newark, N.J., and Mrs. Mable Cross Hartman of Upper Montclair, N.J.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Effie Matilda, on Nov. 1, 1959; one sister, Maude; and two brothers, Clarence and Earl.

Before moving to a farm near Grinnell in 1947, Mr. Cross had lived in Stillwater, Okla., where he was associated with Oklahoma A & M University. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Stillwater.
