LONGTIME RESIDENT
OF AREA, DIES

Joe Lee, 71, longtime resident of rural Grinnell, died suddenly Thursday morning at this home.

Funeral services were held this afternoon (Monday) from the Grinnell Methodist church with the Rev. Willard Reynolds of Earlham officiating. Vocal music was provided by Mrs. LaForest Sherman and Mrs. Donovan Evans, accompanied by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner at the organ.

Pallbearers were Leonard Evans, Thomas Tone, Reuel Elliott, Vincent Hotchkin, Verne Brooks, and Harold Edgington. Honorary pallbearers were Laverne Morrison, James McCulloch, Fred Hillary, Mack Jackson, O.P. Ryan and Dale DeLong.

Interment was in the Forest cemetery at Oskaloosa with James-Schalinske Funeral Home in charge.

The son of William and Blanche Jones Lee, he was born July 29, 1892, at Ben Davis, Ind., and moved to Iowa and settled near Oskaloosa when he was 14. On Sept. 15, 1926, he was united in marriage with Verda Piersel.

The couple lived on the farm of her parents near Rose Hill and then moved to a farm southeast of Grinnell in February of 1928. This was where he died.

During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Camp Taylor with the heavy artillery.

After the war he was employed at the Newton foundry and later as foreman of the Lenox foundry in Grinnell. When the foundry closed, he returned to farming until his retirement six years ago. He had continued to make his home on the farm.

Survivors include his widow, Verda; a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Barbara Jo) Gain of Searsboro; and two grandsons, Jamie Lee Fain and David Wayne Fain.

He was preceded in death by his mother, when he was two years of age and by his father when he was 14.
