RITES HELD FOR MRS. MCELWEE

Laura May McElwee, 97, died Sunday morning, Feb. 10, at Friendship Manor where she had lived since December 1972.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson of the Grinnell Christian Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers were Jerome Allen, Ronald Allen, Bill Johnson, Jerry Allen, James Johnson and Michael Johnson.

Burial was in the Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma.

Memorials in Mrs. McElwee's name may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Albert and Mary Allen Travis, she was born Aug. 20, 1887, near Greenup, Ill. She attended school near her home.

On Nov. 25, 1906, she was married to James (Ed) McElwee at her family home. The couple came to Iowa to farm near Cummings in 1929, later moving to a farm near Spirit Lake before coming to Grinnell in 1938 to live on an acreage near Arbor Lake.

Survivors include two daughters, Edna Cox of Long Grove and Grace Allen of Grinnell; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death b her parents; her husband in 1965; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Ed, Lee and Frank Travis; and one sister, Myrna Greeson.
