HOWARD VANNESS

Howard W. Vanness, 87, of Grinnell died Friday, July 20, at the Mayflower Health Care Center.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with Steve Brennecke of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Organist was Teresa Thompson, and vocalists were Leroy and Doris Calvin. Members of the Grinnell American Legion Color Guard conducted military rites.

The son of Elvin and Elsie Butin Vanness, he was born Oct. 6, 1913, near Reasnor. He was raised in Sully and was a 1931 graduate of Sully High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.

He was married to Irene Willemsen Sept. 12, 1946, in Lynnville. They lived in Sully where Mr. Vanness worked with is father and brother-in-law in masonry construction.

The couple moved to Grinnell in 1959, and Mr. Vanness retired from the family business in the late 1970s. He had been a resident of the Mayflower Health Care Center since February of this year.

He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion and attended Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife and one daughter, Donna Klinzman of Iowa City. His parents and two sisters, Dorotha Geurts and Doris Drayson, preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or the Mayflower Human Needs Fund.
