ALBERT L. FICKEL

Albert L. Fickel, son of Jeremiah and Lucy Fickel, was born Feb. 4, 1883 near Stockport, Iowa, in Van Buren County. He departed this life at his home in Searsboro at 8:20 pm. on January 16th, 1957 at the age of 73 years, 11 months, and 12 days.

A definite decline in health began for Mr. Fickel about 30 years ago. For the past 16 or 18 years he had been almost entirely confined to his home, and for the past three weeks he had been bedfast.

He was converted when a young man, under the ministry of Miss Lorena Terrill in a revival meeting being held in the Friends church at Pleasant Plain, Iowa; and became a member of that church.

On December 12, 1911 he was united in marriage to Hettie Watson, in her home near Stockport, Iowa and they established their first home southwest of Stockport.

To this union were born three children. A son, Elgie, who died in infancy, a second son, Raymond, and a daughter, Winifred.

For several years the family resided in Van Buren and Jefferson counties; moving to Searsboro in 1927 where they had continued to live to the present time.

About 20 years ago the entire family was taken into the membership of the Searsboro Friends church. Over a period of years, the greatly handicapped Mr. Fickel, came almost regularly with his wife, son, and daughter to the services of the church. His desire to be in the house of the Lord gave to him, somehow ablilty to get there, with the help of this loved ones. When finally he could no longer come, he was sincerely missed and one and all knew that he was absent only because it was no longer possible for him to be there.

Those who visited him in these last years recognized a most patient sufferer. As long as he was able to talk he talked of others, not of himself. He was grateful to be a child of God and did not complain of God's providence in his life.

His parents, four sisters and two brothers have preceded him in death.

The immediate survivors are his wife, Hettie, and son, Raymond of Searsboro, Iowa, Mrs. Henry Galbreath, (Winifred) of Des Moines, Iowa, one brother, Harry of Bloomfield, Iowa, a number of relatives and friends.

Two funeral services were held. One at Searsboro Community Friends church at 10 a.m., Jan. 18th, 1957. Rev. Myrtle Lee and Rev. Annie Laurie Greiner officiated. Music was by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Steen, Mrs. Leo Watson, and Mrs. Frank Mitchell all of Searsboro.

Final services were held at the Friends church of Stockport, Iowa, with Dr. Anna Spann of University Park, Iowa officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
