Julia Caroline Elliott was born Jan. 16, 1849, at Deer Park, Ill., the oldest child of Joseph Sargent and Mary Hayes Cummings. Her mother died when she was about four years of age and after her father’s remarriage, the family moved to Iowa. In February, 1867, living one year at Brooklyn and coming to the farm in 1868.

During their residence at Brooklyn, on Dec. 22, 1867, she was united in marriage to Jacob T. Elliott, whose death occurred in Oct. 1890. In Oct. 1868 they removed to her present home where she has resided continuously for fifty years.

Four children were born to them, Leroy, now of South Dakota, Lucy, who died in childhood, Mrs. Mary Strine of Newton and Raymond, who has been her companion for the past few years.

Early in life she united with the Presbyterian church, afterwards becoming a member of the Christian church were she has served for so many years.

For fifty years she has gone in and out with us in her daily life, first to help in sickness or time of need, a friend to be depended on for sympathy and help, bearing the hardships which fell to her fortune with the fortitude which comes from patient endurance.

Never afraid to raise her voice in class, always her portion laid up ahead for her church, she has heard her Saviour’s voice saying, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord”, which she did on Monday, Nov. 11, 1918.

The friends from a distance who attended the funeral of Mrs. J. C. Elliott were L. G. Elliott of South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. John Strine and family of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. John Francis of Victor, Mr. Shadbolt and Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Tinker of Grinnell and Mrs. Herbert Godfrey and daughter of Joliet, Ill.
