DWIGHT 'SHADE' ASBERRY, 57

Dwight "Shade" Asberry, 57, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at his home.

A celebration of his life will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Chaplain Suzanne Vogel, WFLS Chaplain Services, officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Damian Benson, Mason Smith, Shane Burkett, Gabe Neighbors, Kenny Goughnour, Jim Pinkerton, Rick Pinkerton, Tracy Goldsmith, and Bill McGinnis.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the Dwight "Shade' Asberry Memorial Fund sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with his family at www.smithfh.com.

Dwight was born on June 24, 1955, in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the son of William and Josie (Perkins) Asberry. He was raised and educated in Grinnell.

On July 14, 1973, he was united in marriage to Sharon Sue Van Draska at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell. They raised their family in Grinnell and Dwight was employed at Sam Berman and Sons in Grinnell for 35 years. He retired on June 30, 2009 due to his health. He loved and took great pride in his job as a crane operator.

Dwight enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them grow. He also enjoyed riding around in his Ford Mustang with his best friend and partner in crime, his dog Ezra.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon Asberry of Grinnell; his son, Paul (Molly) Asberry of Montezuma; his daughters, Amy Asberry of Grinnell, and Kalyn (Keith) Bonjour of Davenport; four grandchildren, Damian Benson, Tylia Kaisand, Mason Smith, and Brinley Bonjour; and his siblings, Oliver (Marg) Asberry of New York, N.Y., Lonnie (Darla) Asberry of Grinnell, and Jimmie Asberry of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Linda Beaver and Cheryl Lingenfelter.
