SMITH RITES HELD
LAST THURSDAY

Funeral services were held last Thursday, Aug. 20, for Mrs. Ellen Smith of Montezuma. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery with James Williamson, Ernest Petersen, Charles Johnston, Elmer Arvidson, Gail Latcham and Carl Pearson serving as casket bearers. Rev. G.R. Dieken conducted the services and the Steffy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Special music was by Mr. and Mrs. Keith Stahl.

Ellen, daughter of Sarah and John McCluskey, was born in Coal Valley, Ill., and passed away at her home Aug. 18 at 95 years of age. At the age of three she moved with her family to Poweshiek County and attended rural schools. As a child she had to walk three miles to attend the Fairview Presbyterian Church.

On Feb. 3, 1892, she married Horatio Smith and they had three children. Their entire married life of almost 40 years was spent in this community. Since the death of her husband in 1931 Mrs. Smith has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ross Meldrem.

Besides Mrs. Meldrem, she is survived by a son Clarence, Waterloo, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
