MRS. VIOLET MAYS
Mrs. Violet Mays died at her home in Newton last Friday. Funeral services were held at the A.M.E. church in Newton in charge of the pastor, Rev. Mr. Peterson, Monday morning, at which a large number of friends and relatives gathered. Interment was made at Hazelwood Cemetery yesterday afternoon.
Mrs. Mays, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lucas of this city, was born at the farm home near Ewart and later moved to Grinnell with the family where she received her education and graduated from the high school. From Grinnell the family moved to Buxton and it was while the family lived there she was married to Marion Mays of Newton almost thirteen years ago.
She united with the Methodist church when a small girl at Grinnell and was a member of the A.M.E. Church at Newton at the time of her death.
At the funeral, "The End of a Perfect Day" and "There Will be no Night There" were sung by her request. She leaves to mourn her untimely going, her husband, a son and four daughters, the youngest but four months old; three brothers, Henry, Bruce and Aaron; three sisters, Martha, Rebecca and Anna May; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Craig; two aunts, Mrs. L.A. Renfrow and Mrs. Anna Goode Brown.
Her three brothers were pall bearers.
Among those present from a distance at the funeral services were: Henry Lucas, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Walden, of Newton, Lena Lucas, of New Sharon, George Lucas and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kiner of Ewart; and Walter Smith of Chicago.
