HELD TODAY

Lester L. Smith, 67, of Malcom died Friday morning at his home following an extended illness.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with Dr. Lawrence P. Fitzpatrick, pastor of the Malcom-Sheridan parish of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Joanne Schneekloth, and vocalist will be Ruth Ann Dayton. Pallbearers will be George Baustian, Keith Koger, Dennis Maschmann, Lyman McDowell, Wavern McDowell and Sonny Schneekloth. Honorary pallbearers will Lyle Bauman, Ed Cook, Frank Ferneau, Kenneth McKeag. Burial will be at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.

The son of Sealy and Katherine Rupp Smith, he was born Nov. 24, 1911, at Hartwick. He attended Hartwick schools and lived in Poweshiek County all of his life.

On Nov. 11, 1933, he was married to Elizabeth Maxine Winchell at Brooklyn. The couple made their home in Malcom, where Mr. Smith was employed by the Malcom Elevator for 26 years. He was a member of the Malcom Fire Department for 25 years, the Malcom Odd Fellows Lodge, and the Malcom United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife; his son, Harry L. Smith of Malcom; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Henze of Newton and Mrs. Floyd (Vivian) Parker of Richfield, Minn.; and two brothers, Everett Smith of Lebanon, Tenn., and Wayne Smith of South English. He was preceded in death by his parents.
